Track the progress of the day's
play
Nottingham, June 27:
44 overs: Sri Lanka in a hole at
221 for seven
England snagged three wickets in two overs
to leave Sri Lanka in a huge hole to dig out of at 221 for seven
in 44 overs. England will be looking to wrap up Sri Lanka for 235
and grab the bonus point. Chaminda Vaas (3) and Naveed Nawaz (3)
were at the crease.
Russel Arnold was the first to go, run out
unfortunately. Kumar Sangakkara played it back down the track, Matthew
Hoggard just got his fingers to the ball, which ricocheted onto
the stumps. Arnold made 29.
In the next over Sangakkara went for a lofted
shot, but ended up spiraling it up in the air for James Kirtley
at mid-on to take a simple catch. Sangakkara was out for 23.
Then Upul Chandana went for a pull, the ball
hurries onto him, took the top edge and presented itself to Graham
Thorpe at midwicket. Chandana could only manage 1.
30th over: Collingwood jolts Sri Lanka, 152
for four
Paul Collingwood struck two crippling blows,
sending back Romesh Kaluwitharana and Mahela Jayawardene, in quick
succession to leave Sri Lanka in a spot of bother at 152 for four.
Kaluwitharana played well for his 52, but
a moment of lost concentration saw him hit one in the air. Graham
Thorpe, diving to his right, plucked it out of the air at mid-off.
Jayawardene played all over a delivery and had his middle-stump
knocked back. He made 29.
Two new batsmen at the crease, England certainly
have their tails up and will be looking to go for the kill.
19th over: Flintoff strikes, Sri Lanka 91 for
one
Marvan Atapattu played a woeful shot to a
Andrew Flintoff delivery, and ended up spooning the shot to Ronnie
Irani at mid-off, who dives and comes off with a great one-handed
catch. Atapattu made 47, Sri Lanka were 91 for two. Romesh Kaluwithrana
was at the crease on 25, with Mahela Jayawardene the new man in.
5th over: Jayasuriya departs, Sri Lanka 19 for
one
Nasser Hussain took a blinder at short extra-cover
to dismiss Sanath Jayasuriya as Sri Lanka reached 19 for one in
the fifth over. Jayasuriya went for a drive off Matthew Hoggard,
Hussain diving to his right, plucked it out of thin air one-handed.
50 overs: England post challenging total
A fine 83 by comeback man Alec Stewart and
a swashbuckling unbeaten 50 off 28 balls by Andrew Flintoff helped
England post a challenging 293 for seven against Sri Lanka in the
first match of the Natwest triangular trophy here on Thursday.
40th over: Arnold gets the break, England 199
for five
Ronnie Irani tried to heave a delivery over
square leg for a maximum, but ended up hitting it straight down
the throat of Mahela Jayawardene. Russel Arnold gets the breakthrough,
Irani goes for 39, England were 199/5 in the 40th over. Meanwhile,
Alec Stewart completed his half-century, he was unbeaten on 53.
35th over: Stewart, Irani steady England, 180
for four
An unbeaten 76-run partnership between Alec
Stewart and Ronnie Irani steadied the England innings after a shaky
start. After 35 overs, the hosts reached 180 for four. Stewart —
the oldest player in the England side — was on 39, with Irani —
making a comeback into the side — was on 34.
19th over: Fernando's twin-strike has England
in trouble again
Dilhara Fernando rattled England with two-wickets
in an over, to thwart the rearguard action mounted by Nasser Hussain
and Graham Thorpe. Both batsmen had their furniture disturbed, to
leave the hosts on 104/4. Thorpe flayed at a short, rising delivery
only to drag it back onto his stumps, while Hussain played right
through a fast ball to have his off-bail clipped.
9th over: Vaas, Zoysa strike early; England
47 for two
The opening strike pair of Chaminda Vaas and
Nuwan Zoysa did their trick for Sri Lanka, sending Nick Knight (20)
and Marcus Trescothick (26) back to the pavillion, as England reached
47 for two in the ninth overs. Skipper Nasser Hussain was still
to get off the mark.
Toss: England elect to bat in first one-dayer
England won the toss and elected to bat in
the first one-day triangular series match against Sri Lanka at Trent
Bridge on Thursday.
