Mahela Jayawardene
Date of Birth: 27th May 1977, Colombo
Test Debut: Against Sri Lanka vs India at Colombo in 1997/98
ODI Debut: Against Sri Lanka vs Zimbabwe at Colombo in 1997/99
Bats: Right handed
Bowls: Right arm medium

He is one of the most technically accomplished batsman in the side, Jayawardene has emerged as Sri Lanka's most consistent run scorer. The 25-year old right-handed batsman is also a highly effective performer in one-day cricket with the ability to suit the tempo of his innings to the demands of any situation.

A vulnerable starter, but after that he has shown that once he gets his eye in, he is like a rock and his immense strength of character can really smash the opposition bowlers. With his deft touch and discrete elegance, he has matured rapidly over the years which has made him a permanent fixture in the middle order.

An average just a fraction under 50 in Tests speaks volumes for his ability, but he must prove he can flourish on foreign soil before being ranked among the game's true batting greats.

In the recently concluded Test series against England, he looked in rich form. Against Kent, he scored 119 and followed it up with 125 not out against Middlesex. He started of the Test series with a blazing 107 at Lord's. In the second Test at Edgbaston, which the tourists lost by an innings and 111 runs, he showed tremendous courage and was the lone soldier with scores of some respectability - In the first innings Sri Lanka were shot out for 162 and Jayawardene scored 47 and a fine 59 in the second innings.

He has six centuries and 13 half-centuries in his 99 matches and average is a mediocre 32.25.
