His name was not known to many cricket followers. But many won't forget
Matthew Hoggard's name after his demolition act against New Zealand at
Christchurch in March 2002 where he took 7 for 63. With Caddick absent
and Gough doubtful, he is England's spearhead and will have to bear a
heavy burden. With his reverse swing ability, he might pose some threat
in breezy conditions.
Another asset which can cause some problems is that he is surprisingly
slippery off the pitch. This big, strongly built Yorkshireman is expected
to perform well at Headingley and Trent Bridge. A strong physique means
he is not prone to the same number of injuries which afflict many young
fast bowlers.
