Apart from Sachin Tendulkar, this left-handed batsman from Kolkata is
the only other match-winner especially in the short version of game. With
superb timing he almost caresses the ball to the boundary. When on song,
he can go for a murderous assault on any bowler on his day.
The way he steps out and pounces on the ball and lofts it over mid-wicket,
long-on, long-off is a delight for spectators. But then Ganguly is not
just strokes and class and powerful batting. He has a sound temperament
and the ability to rise to the big occasion.
Only a person who is mentally strong could have responded in the manner
he did to widespread criticism to his selection for the tour of England
in 1996. On the strength of his figures and undoubted class, he has taken
his place as among the `Big Three' of the Indian batting order, the other
two being Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.
And in the year 2001, he has also proved himself to be a tough, no nonsense
captain. A record of four wins and only one defeat in his first six Test
matches as captain - including a memorable series triumph against Steve
Waugh's then-invincible Australians clearly reflects he has all the qualities
of a good leader. This Prince of Kolkota has played some memoarable innings
for his country and shared some record-breaking opening wicket partnerships
with Tendulkar.
